45 percent of eight to 17-year-old Brits have encountered inappropriate and disturbing online content. This is proven by a recently published survey commissioned by the British child protection officer Dame Rachel de Souza on the topic of online safety among 2,005 children of this age cohort and their parents. In addition to content about self-harm and suicide, the boys and girls were confronted with pornography, sexualized and violent images and anonymous trolls.

Poorer people are more affected by malicious content

Children entitled to free school meals are therefore significantly more likely to see all types of harmful content. Only half of the children who had seen such malicious content reported it to the sending platform. 40 percent of the children who did not report said this was due to a lack of trust in the portals' reactions.

Of those who reported harmful content, a quarter said nothing was done as a result. In the UK, two thirds of eight to 12 year olds are on social media and messaging platforms. According to the survey, a majority of children and parents are in favor of a mandatory minimum age to be able to be active on platforms. In the USA, the majority of parents are in favor of an entry age of 13 ( HERE ). And many are increasingly noticing mental health problems in their children due to heavy social media use ( HERE ).

Tech companies have a duty

From the perspective of the children's commissioner, the conclusion of the survey is clear: self-regulation by the technology companies has failed. She sees the UK's new online safety law as a huge opportunity to protect future generations of children from harm online.
