It's hard to avoid online banking these days. Ultimately, this is where the weak point lies: Fraudsters try to gain access online in various ways.
In order to protect yourself against fraud in online banking, the Federal Office for Information Security, or BSI for short, has published a corresponding checklist . This checklist helps in two ways.
On the one hand, the list gives advice if you have become a victim of fraud. On the other hand, you can also get valuable tips on how to protect yourself from fraud when online banking.

Online banking fraud
What to do if you are a victim?
- Block your bank account and your access to online banking . The quickest way to do this is, for example, to access the online banking and enter the wrong PIN . Or call the central blocking emergency number 116 116 (from abroad +49 116 116) and have your access blocked by telephone.
- Then contact your bank immediately and report any abnormalities. If necessary, it is possible to reverse account transactions.
- Check the account transactions immediately using the paper statement.
- Check whether your computer or smartphone is infected with malware and clean affected devices professionally. In the worst case, this can mean purchasing new hardware .
- If an emergency has occurred, you will find all the important information about online banking

What can you do to avoid becoming a victim in the first place?
The victim in our example used the so-called mTAN procedure, which the BSI advises against. Since an SMS easily be intercepted or the smartphone stolen, this type of TAN generation is only partially secure and can be changed in your bank's settings. In addition, the victim carries out the transaction on the same device on which he creates the TAN . If the smartphone or computer is already compromised, it is easy for criminals to overcome security mechanisms. If you carry out a transaction using a smartphone , you should always generate your TAN on a physically separate device such as a TAN generator.
Regardless of whether you do your banking on your smartphone or PC your PIN or TAN there . You can prevent unnoticed access to your device by, among other things, locking it with password protection, PIN or e.g. B. Activate fingerprint. Regular updates of the operating system and important software (on smartphones and PCs ) round off your preventive measures. Only current systems can ward off new threats and prevent infection with malware. Everything you need for secure banking transactions with mobile devices .
