The social media platform OnlyFans has around 180 million users worldwide, around 2.1 million of whom regularly create content. The website offers a home for all types of content. Many people mainly associate it with nude photos and similar content. When it comes to protecting privacy and security online, there is a lot at stake - as the hack of the dating website Ashley Madison in 2015 showed. Many of those affected still have trouble with it years later. ESET security experts show how users can protect themselves on WeLiveSecurity.
Adult entertainment and privacy online have a complicated relationship. This results in numerous threats, such as data theft, blackmail or data leaks. OnlyFans users are not exempt from these risks. Creators of content on the platform report hacked accounts, revenge porn or content theft. Subscribers download the content and then sell or distribute it through other channels.
But it's not just content creators who are at risk, but also platform users. Security and privacy should be a top priority. For this reason, it is important to be careful when sharing personal information online and to be wary of stalkers, scammers, and other malicious people.
This means users stay on the safe side with OnlyFans
- OnlyFans creators must provide their real bank details, name and ID not only for the verification process but also to get paid. For example, use secondary social media accounts or a second email address that is not associated with your close contacts. This way you create a certain level of anonymity.
- Cybercriminals try to hack user accounts using clever social engineering or even cyberbullying techniques in order to obtain access data. Users should therefore be cautious when receiving unsolicited messages asking for private information.
- Users of the platform should have a strong password and enable two-factor authentication (2FA). Two-factor authentication is an additional layer of security to protect online accounts from unauthorized access. In addition to the password, it requires entering a code that is sent to a phone or generated by an authentication app. Only then will access to the account be granted.
- OnlyFans users should be careful when posting pictures. Screenshots are not possible from Android devices. But the situation is different with Apple devices, where they are not blocked.
