• Hydraulic balancing increases the efficiency of the heating and reduces energy costs
  • Funding is available for hydraulic balancing
  • Energy advice provides information on how to optimize the heating system

Not all rooms get warm enough? Do you want to improve the efficiency of your heating? Then a hydraulic balancing makes sense. “Hydraulic balancing ensures that the right amount of water can flow through all radiators,” explains Inse Ewen, energy consultant at the Bremen Consumer Center.

Important adjusting screw: hydraulic balancing

The water in the heating system generally seeks the path with the least resistance. This means that water flows through short and thick heating pipes rather than through long and thin heating pipes. This means that rooms that are further away from the boiler may not receive enough heating water. In close rooms with too much water pressure, the thermostatic valve can no longer work properly. Often, when dealing with such problems, the water temperature or pump pressure is simply increased - but this is not an energy-saving solution. This can also cause noises, such as gurgling.

The advantages of hydraulic balancing are obvious. “This puts an end to annoying flow noises. “In addition, the thermostatic valves now work as they should,” says Inse Ewen. If the desired room temperature is 20 degrees, for example, the setting to 3 is sufficient. Gone are the days when it only gets pleasantly warm at setting 5. “Everyone will be pleased that energy savings of up to 15 percent can be expected,” says Inse Ewen.

Apply for a grant in advance

The hydraulic balancing is carried out by heating construction companies. After implementation, the complete calculation documents are available as proof. This includes the documentation of the heat output for each radiator, the valve settings, the flow temperature setting and the pump setting. “This documentation is absolutely necessary if funding is being used, but is also particularly important if adjustments need to be made or an adjustment has to be made after the heating system has been replaced,” explains Inse Ewen. After replacing windows or carrying out insulation measures, the hydraulic balancing of the house must always be adjusted.

The Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) is currently subsidizing the optimization of the heating system with 20 percent of the costs as a cash grant.
The application must be submitted before commissioning.

Hire a specialist company

The consumer advice center is repeatedly asked whether hydraulic balancing can be carried out yourself. There is a clear “no” to this. It must be carried out by a specialist company.

Part of the hydraulic balancing is also the correct setting of the heating curve. If the heating curve is too flat, the rooms will not get warm enough. If it is too steep, energy is consumed unnecessarily and the thermostatic valves regulate less well.

If the temperature of the heating water is too high, the thermostat valves do not regulate properly, heating cables lose heat unnecessarily and condensing boilers or heat pumps become inefficient.
The temperature of the heating water must depend on the outside temperature.

The flow temperature control of a heating system is responsible for this. A heating curve is set or programmed in it, which determines which flow temperature is generated at which outside temperature.
