Digital technologies should be standard in all schools. This is what 93 percent of Germans want. The president of the digital association Bitkom eV Achim Berg calls for young people to get excited about information technologies at an early age.

Parents want computer science to be a compulsory subject

Four out of five (83 percent) would like computer science to be taught compulsorily from the 5th grade onwards. Three quarters (74 percent) of the population as a whole demand this, compared to two thirds (65 percent) last year. This is the result of a representative survey of 1,007 people aged 16 and over, including 215 mothers and fathers of school-age children.

“Students should be introduced to computer science at an early age. Schools must provide them with the necessary knowledge and skills as best as possible on their way into the digital world. This will also help to enable more young people to pursue a career in IT.”

Bitkom President Achim Berg

Computer science and digital skills desired

Two thirds of Germans (65 percent) are convinced that digital skills such as programming make students fit for the world of work. In addition to computer science being a compulsory subject, a large majority (93 percent) would like the use of digital technologies and media to become standard in all schools. Hardly anyone (3 percent) believes that these technologies have no place in schools. Berg: “The demands from the population show how much our education system is lagging behind digital demands. Digital devices, digital teaching content, digital skills of teachers: this requires more than money and devices. Ultimately, it’s about a major education reform that will fundamentally change the teaching and learning culture in schools.”

Note on methodology

The information is based on a survey that Bitkom Research conducted on behalf of the digital association Bitkom. 1,007 people aged 16 and over in Germany were surveyed by telephone, including 215 mothers and fathers with school-age children. The overall survey is representative. The question was: “To what extent do you agree or disagree with the following statements?”
