The claim
“From today onwards, 30 km/h is the maximum speed in Paris.” That's what it's saying on social media at the moment.
Our conclusion
Incorrect. The regulation has been in place since mid-2021. The image circulating actually comes from the Tagesschau, but was published at the end of August 2021.
In Germany there is always a passionate debate about the possible introduction of a general speed limit on motorways. speed limit of 130 kilometers per hour on motorways . But what about the capital Paris?
Claims are currently circulating on social networks that 30 km/h will be introduced as the new maximum speed on city streets at the end of April or beginning of May 2023. A picture of the Eiffel Tower with the inscription “From today on, 30 km/h is the maximum speed in Paris” and the logo of the Tagesschau is spreading rapidly. However, this representation does not entirely correspond to reality.

Tagesschau photo causes confusion: Paris' speed limit regulations have been known for a long time
The picture of the Eiffel Tower that was shared on social media was actually from the Tagesschau. its Facebook page, among other places . On that day, the Tagesschau also reported on transport policy in Paris in an article The report noted that since that day, a speed limit of 30 km/h has been in effect on most streets in the French capital.

The Paris city administration had already decided on August 30, 2021 to reduce the maximum speed for the majority of roads to 30 kilometers per hour. This measure was introduced primarily to improve road safety and reduce noise pollution. A communication from the city administration at the time stated that this new regulation would come into force.
The Tagesschau image is now also used in current postings, giving the impression that this is a new change. But people forget to mention the actual date, which leads to confusion among social media users.
Safety: Increased braking distance at 50 instead of 30 km/h
Among other things, there was a lot of discussion about the speed limit, as the braking distance at 50 km/h increases significantly compared to 30 km/h. For example, an obstacle 25 meters away would be hit at a speed of 28 km/h, which of course significantly increases the risk of injury for both drivers and potential people on the road. Here is a graphic:

It is important to note that this regulation is not new and there have been no recent changes. The information on the official website of the Paris municipality states that some streets exempt from this speed limit . The city administration is thus making it clear that there is already an existing speed limit of 30 km/h, which applies to most streets in Paris, but is not applied across the board.
Conclusion

It is important to emphasize that there are no current changes or new regulations regarding the speed limit in Paris. The 30 km/h regulation has existed since 2021, as the Tagesschau reported at the time, and continues to apply.
