Criminals are increasingly trying to find new ways to spread their scams, such as with alleged information about a new passport. An increasingly common means: SMS. The criminals send random SMS to numbers and hope that as many people as possible will fall into their network, warns our cooperation partner Watchlist Internet .

New passport

A new SMS scam is as follows:

Your new passport will be issued and confirmed on [DATE]. Check your details here: https://oesterreich.at-anmelden.net/

But be careful! This is a sophisticated attempt at fraud. There may be other messages circulating with different wording or content.

The criminals want to trick you into clicking on the link and selecting your bank. You can choose between Erste Bank and Sparkassen, Bank Austria, BAWAG, Volksbank and bank99.

In a further step you will be redirected to a very professionally recreated phishing page of your bank. There you should enter your login details - which would give the criminals access to your account!

Federal Ministry warns

Federal Ministry of the Interior also warns of this trap on its website:

If you received a text message saying your new passport was ready, don’t click on the link! It is an attempted fraud. […]
If you have entered your details, contact your bank immediately. If debits have already been made, they may still be able to be canceled. Change your login details immediately to protect your account. File a report at the nearest police station.

Recognize SMS fraud
SMS with link? For SMS from unknown senders, do not click on the link and delete the message.

Pay attention to the link! If you have to log in or provide your bank details, it is almost always an attempt at fraud.

Ask for! If you are not sure whether a message is a scam, ask. Write to the official email address or call the official customer hotline of the post office, your bank or the Ministry of Finance. There you will find out whether the message is legitimate.”

How to recognize phishing or smishing

  • SMS with link? Be careful with SMS from unknown senders that contain a link! These are almost exclusively attempts at fraud! Don't click on the link and delete the message!
  • Pay attention to the link! Are you asked to log in or provide your details? Pay close attention to the link! This is often how you can recognize attempted fraud. In this case, the link to the alleged online banking is https:// oesterreich.at-anmelden.net /bank - this is not an official online banking link!
  • Context? Stop and think: Does texting make sense? Have I ordered a package or applied for a new passport? Has it ever happened that you received a legitimate SMS with such information? If not, it's probably a scam!
  • Ask for! Not sure if a message is a scam? Ask for! Write to the official email address (search for it on the Internet beforehand) or call the official number of the post office, your bank, the Ministry of Finance or the municipality. There you can find out whether a message is legitimate or fake!

Have you entered your details? This is what needs to be done

Contact your bank: Contact your bank immediately and try to have any debits that may have been canceled. Change your login details immediately and protect your account.
