Because the first step to more protection online is a secure password. And it's very easy to implement this resolution - with our tips!
Digital security starts with the password – Digital Barometer 2022
A strong password is the first and simplest protection for all activities in the digital world. That's why it's worth investing a few minutes to make passwords for Internet applications more secure. With our tips for using and managing secure passwords , everyone will find it easy to use secure passwords in the future.
Although according to their own information, 52% of those surveyed use secure passwords to protect themselves from dangers on the Internet, the representative survey by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and the Police Crime Prevention Department - the Digital Barometer 2022 - reveals: at the same time, about every second one has a password for multiple accounts.
How to create strong passwords for email and social media accounts
- Never use the same password for multiple applications - this especially applies to Internet services.
- Always change preset passwords.
- Do not use names of family members or pets that contain a number or special character.
- Choose a long password (at least 25 characters with two types of characters, e.g. uppercase and lowercase letters) or a shorter but complex password (at least eight characters and four types of characters: uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters).
Additionally secure accounts with a second factor and manage passwords securely
More and more online service providers are offering additional protection for entering passwords - for example. B. Email or social media accounts – two-factor authentication. An individual code is generated for each registration, for example via app or SMS. This second factor, which is necessary for registration, allows accounts to be additionally secured, as even with the correct password, login is only possible if the code is known.
Password managers offer another option. Using a password manager allows you to securely manage your passwords for all of your different accounts in one place. You then only have to remember a “master password”. However, make sure there is sufficient complexity here, otherwise attackers could obtain all of your access data at once! Some password managers can also help you create strong passwords.
