Over 30 million people in Germany alone use the online payment service PayPal and enjoy numerous advantages and security that are tailored to the needs of the customer.
A major advantage of PayPal is not only the ability to carry out transactions easily, but also buyer protection and the reimbursement of any return costs that may arise in the event of a return.
PayPal had previously covered this for up to twelve returns per year worth a maximum of 25 euros if the corresponding option for free returns was activated in the account.
Even though the majority of online shops already bear the reimbursement costs themselves, excessive use of this service could save up to 300 euros annually.
PayPal no longer covers costs for returns
However, according to PayPal, the service, which appears to be frequently used, will be discontinued on November 27, 2022.

Although the company does not explain this step in detail, it is reasonable to assume that the service was used too extensively and that the costs are no longer affordable from PayPal's point of view.
At PayPal, we are constantly updating and developing new offers for our customers. Sometimes certain services need to be discontinued as part of these larger changes.
We understand the popularity of free returns. However, we continue to offer you as a buyer support, such as buyer protection.
PayPal, FAQ
PayPal itself advises its customers to complete returns before November 27th to avoid incurring costs.
You can submit a free return request until November 26, 2022, 11:59 p.m. local time. From the next day, November 27, 2022, the service will be discontinued.

What happens if my claim is still being processed when free returns are discontinued?
If you submit a valid application before November 27, 2022, it will be reviewed as usual. If approved, the request will be processed even if free returns have already been set.
PayPal
Once the service is discontinued, PayPal will no longer accept any further requests for reimbursement of return shipping costs.
