An old sharepic creates new excitement!

There was already a sharepic circulating last year that expressed outrage about taxes on pensions. But the lack of information about a time on the Sharepic means that it always looks current.

This sharepic is:

That's crazy!
Because pensions are increasing by 3%, 48,000 seniors will have to pay tax on their pensions in the future!
This brings the number of pensioners liable to tax to a gigantic 4.98 million!

Pensions should be tax-free!

The fact check

Pension taxation is not new ( see here ),

The sharepic made the rounds in the summer of 2019. In fact, there was a pension increase in 2019, 3.2 percent in West Germany and 3.9 percent in East Germany. Although this is initially positive, it also has a dark side: around 48,000 pensioners are expected to see their pensions slip above the tax-free allowance of currently 9,000 euros per year.

However, the “gigantic number of 4.98 million” is an estimate. The Parliamentary State Secretary at the BMF, Christine Lambrecht, responded with this number to a question from Matthias W. Birkwald, a left-wing member of the Bundestag. ( Page 12 )

In 2015 there were 5.8 million pensioners who paid taxes. At this point in time, there was no current evidence of how many pensioners there were in 2019.

to the Federal Statistical Office , no more current figures are available because the “ results of the wage and income tax statistics (…) are only available around three and a half years after the end of the assessment year due to the long deadlines for tax assessment ”.

received more than the basic allowance of 9,168 euros per year This amount is annually . In addition, not everything has to be taxed, just a percentage that is calculated based on the year in which you retire. this contribution has been increasing continuously since 2005 .

“As a result of the adjustments to the pension values as of July 1, 2019, around 48,000 taxpayers with pension benefits are expected to be subject to additional income tax burdens,”

said the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) in April 2019 ( PDF , page 6). When asked by Corrective, the BMF announced that the 48,000 were taxpayers with pension benefits and not individual people. “Couples who are assessed together should count as one taxpayer”.

Conclusion:

It is a sharepic that circulated in the summer of 2019. But since the pension will be increased again in July 2020 (like every year) (provision rate not yet known), the Sharepic is virtually experiencing a revival.

Short and sweet: The fact that some pensioners have to pay taxes on their pension has been around since 2019, not just from 2020.

And even if the pension is then taxable, that doesn't mean that there is less left at the end of the day. When filing a tax return, you not only have to declare your income, but also your expenses, and these are often higher, especially for pensioners, due to medication, examinations, walking aids, etc. This in turn can lead to tax relief .
