The alleged quote from Petra Klamm-Rothberger – a fake in a class of its own!

A mutated version of these fakes was already circulating on social networks at the beginning of the year. And what we know ends up on the Internet stays there and is dug up again from time to time.

It's no surprise that this fake is circulating again:

Green Party politician defends murder of raped student:

In the perpetrator's homeland, women who are raped are sentenced to death.
That's why he had to kill her after raping her. We need to understand these cultural differences.

The fact check

As already mentioned, we have known this image to be fake for a long time. Colleague Andre wrote the following in March 2018:

By the way, the following picture is one of my favorite fakes. This is because of the complete story that goes with this fake. But let's start from the beginning: Anyone who suspects that the following sharepic is a scandalous statement from a GREEN politician has fallen for a fake:

“Green Party politician defends murder of raped student” is the false report. But be careful! A screenshot of this hoax has taken on a life of its own. Detached from its source and original intention, this screenshot can no longer be understood and can no longer have the actual effect for which it was invented.

This screenshot first appeared in December 2016. Even if you do NOT know the origin of the screenshot, you can easily identify it as a fake. Three more or less simple points prove that it is a fake:

1. The name

There is no Green Party politician who bears this name. A simple Google search for the name doesn't bring up any results along these lines [1].

2. The tweet

Admittedly, it would have worked that way today, but in December 2016 it wasn't yet feasible: At the time, Twitter had a maximum limit of 140 characters per tweet, and this alleged tweet is well above that at 191 characters.

3. The photo

The search for the face revealed: It is a so-called stock photo, i.e. an image from an image database. For example, this photo can be found on Pixabay and is used on a variety of websites [ 2].

Origin

Unfortunately, what you can no longer tell from the Sharepic is its origin! This fake was originally published on a website called Moselkurier.

However, this Moselkurier was a planned operation to make it clear how easy it is to fall for made-up news. In order not to be exposed, the makers of the Moselkurier packaged the entire scene in a fake-fake story. According to information from the “Moselkurier” website at the time, an “Alfonso Mbambe” was named as the owner in the imprint. There is also a great explanatory video about who this Alfonso is supposed to be:

Of course, this video is also nonsense. The “Moselkurier” website identified Mbambe as the owner, but a search engine search for the imprint address revealed the entire undertaking. In this case, the imprint address was the address of Turbokultur GmbH in Berlin.

So it was originally a fake-fake project. However, this subsequently acquired its own dynamic: unknown third parties took a screenshot of the image and distributed it detached from the old context. In other words: Someone took this story to be TRUE and didn't realize that it was a deliberate deception.

Turbo culture

And who is Turboculture?

As a cross between a film production and a web agency, online storytelling is our specialty. From comedy shows to opinion leading, we have been working on the German Internet for a while now.

Turboculture based in Berlin: Does anyone remember the Masters of Germany? Comes from the same house.
