Germany remained the world leader in receiving dangerous emails in the third quarter. According to the new report “Spam and Phishing in Q3 2018” from security software provider Kaspersky Lab, the number of malicious emails increased significantly worldwide in the last quarter.

Fraudsters remain extremely creative

Most spam emails also targeted German users: 9.83 percent of all malicious emails targeted users in Germany, followed by Russia (6.61 percent) and Great Britain (6.41 percent).

One in ten spam (10.37 percent) also came from Germany, third place worldwide. More spam only came from the USA (10.89 percent) and China (13.47 percent). (Source: Securelist.com)

“We have been observing an increase in phishing attempts for some time. Many factors influence this growth, including the ability of fraudsters to continually develop new schemes and tricks. They also borrow ideas from foreign 'colleagues' to use them as a means of communication in local markets and to further develop their technologies. In the third quarter, for example, they actively directed users to fraudulent websites using scam notifications or used the new iPhone version as a hook,” emphasizes Kaspersky security researcher Nadezhda Demidova.
