As with fishing, hackers throw bait at internet users to trick them into sharing their secret passwords or online banking credentials.

Q1 Brand Phishing Report 2022: Social media network LinkedIn ranks first : Check Point Research publishes which brands have been most often impersonated by hackers to trick people into revealing their private data. Check Point Research (CPR), the specialist division of Check Point Software Technologies, has published its Brand Phishing Report for the first quarter of 2022. The report highlights the brands most frequently impersonated by cybercriminals to steal information or payment data in January, February and March.

Sensational: The social media network LinkedIn topped the rankings for the first time and was responsible for more than half (52 percent) of all phishing attempts this quarter. This represents a dramatic 44 percent increase from the previous quarter, when professional networking ranked fifth and only served as a cover for 8 percent of phishing attempts. LinkedIn overtook DHL as the most frequently abused brand, which was a distant second and accounted for 14 percent of all phishing attempts.

“These phishing attempts are simply attacks of opportunity. “Criminal groups stage these phishing attempts on a large scale to trick as many people as possible into giving up their personal information,” explains Omer Dembinsky, data research group manager at Check Point Software Technologies, “and some attacks are aimed at: either influencing individuals or stealing their data, as we see happening with LinkedIn. The best defense against phishing threats is still knowledge of them. “Especially as employees, people should be trained to recognize suspicious anomalies such as misspelled domains, typos, incorrect data, dubious senders, and other details that can reveal a malicious email or text message.”
