The hacker's scam: misuse well-known brands to lull potential victims into carelessness when an email arrives or a website is visited. The goal: Steal important user data, such as login details, credit cards, bank accounts and preferences.
What was important for Germany this quarter was: DHL remains in second place, which is why everyone should continue to keep their eyes open when an email or SMS arrives from DHL that contains links as to whether this message was really sent by DHL and really a package is expected.

The sender should always be checked, because it often ends with a name of some kind, but not with the company domain. Spelling errors and cheap graphic design can also give away such phishing messages. But since the AI program ChatGPT is able to write or improve phishing emails on request, it is important to pay particular attention.
Also dangerous: Raiffeisen Bank climbed into the ranking of the ten most frequently misused brand names. Phishing emails were sent containing a fraudulent link that led to a false website. There, users should enter their bank details to supposedly secure their account.
Top 9 brand names in Q1 2023
1. Walmart (linked to 16 percent of all phishing attacks worldwide)
2. DHL (13 percent)
3. Microsoft (12 percent)
4. LinkedIn (6 percent)
5. FedEx (4.9 percent)
6. Google (4.8 percent)
7. Netflix (4 percent)
8. Raiffeisen (3.6 percent)
9. PayPal (3.5 percent)
