“Regardless of whether it’s a grandchild’s trick, a promise/notification of winnings, false police officers or Interpol employees – telephone fraud is a perfidious way of depriving older citizens of their savings.”
Dirk Schubert from the prevention team at the Northeim police station
Phone book entry identifies potential victims
In order to obtain the telephone numbers of their future victims, criminals use, among other things, telephone book entries, which can of course also be accessed online. Older people can often be found there using their full names. Older first names and short phone numbers that indicate older telephone contracts are probably particularly popular with fraudsters.
Police support change
In order to make it more difficult for criminals to find potential victims, the Northeim police are following the example of the Göttingen police and also offer the form for changing or deleting telephone book entries.
These can be accessed online via the prevention team's website
