If your cell phone suddenly rings and shows an Austrian number, it could be a scammer from abroad. The increasing cases of “spoofing” and number theft have brought the regulatory authority RTR onto the scene. Now it's time to get mobile phone providers to take action!
The danger behind phone numbers that seem trustworthy
Imagine you get a call. Everything seems normal. But instead of a familiar voice, there is a deception behind it. Not only is this form of fraud sophisticated, it is also becoming increasingly common. And the trick? Callers use real Austrian numbers - often without the knowledge of the actual owners!
RTR takes action
The Rundfunk und Telekom Regels-GmbH (RTR) has had enough of the deceptive maneuvers and is giving headwind. The suggestion? Strict verification of calls that are hidden behind domestic numbers but actually come from abroad. In short, fraudsters will soon no longer be able to play their fake games so easily.
This was reported in the “Ö1 Morgenjournal”
Victims targeted by fraudsters
But it's not just about simple calls. The scam continues to evolve. From innocent questions about your taste in wine to more serious data theft - everything is possible. And the consumer? He stands in the rain and often pays the price.
Cybercrime on the rise
The rise in these fraud cases is no exception. It seems as if online fraud has become the new “normal” crime of the 21st century. The numbers speak for themselves: from 17,068 cases in 2021 to 22,320 the following year. – Is this really the “new normal”?
Conclusion
We live in a time of endless possibilities. However, this also allows fraud to flourish. But with vigilance, education and regulation, we can win the battle against online fraud. And the first steps in this direction are already being taken in Austria!
