A video on Facebook purportedly shows “paralysis pills” in a cake. The manufacturer distances itself from the video material.

We are currently receiving frequent requests for a video in which a cake bar is unwrapped and crumbled. There are two pills inside the cake. These tablets are said to cause symptoms of paralysis:

Is anything known about it? The candy is said to contain pills that cause paralysis.

The fact check

The video went viral in early November 2019 - making it seem like it was a local thing. In fact, according to fact checkers teyit, recorded in Iraq.

As our colleagues at Snopes report, the two small pills were found in a Luppo coconut cream bar. The cake comes from a Turkish manufacturer called Sölen.

However, it is unclear what exactly the video shows, nor how the tablets got into the cake and whether they actually cause paralysis.

Teyit conducted a thorough analysis of the viral material and was able to locate the original video, which was uploaded to YouTube on October 28, 2019:

Based on the language Sorani can be heard towards the end of the clip, the fact-checking portal suspects that it was most likely recorded in a Kurdish region in northern Iraq. The brand of chicken seen in the freezer is also common in this region.

A spokesman for Sölen confirmed to Teyit that the Luppo Coconut Cream cake is made specifically for export and is difficult to find in Turkey. In addition, the manufacturer openly explains its quality testing and emphasizes that after the internal inspection, the products go through an independent inspection and are finally inspected one last time by customs.

Manipulation must therefore have happened in the country of arrival.

In the high-resolution video you can also see that the cake has holes in the chocolate icing when it is unpacked, which of course is not clear evidence that someone actually prepared the candy. Crucially, some filtration systems used to make dough, cream, chocolate and other fillings block particles greater than 700 microns (0.7 millimeters) high or wide.

The production process is also fully automated, meaning the components of each snack are “untouched by human hands.”

According to Teyit, journalists from the region believe that the manipulation of the cakes could be politically motivated. For example, to discredit a popular Turkish brand as part of ongoing Kurdish-Turkish tensions.

In a statement to Snopes, Sölen firmly distanced himself from this viral video and said legal action would be taken against those responsible.

Conclusion

It is unclear how the pills got into the cake and whether they are really dangerous to health. One possibility is that the cake was deliberately manipulated to mislead viewers and discredit a Turkish product.

However, there is no evidence that the objects shown are actually tablets. The cake is also made specifically for sale in Iraq and is relatively difficult to obtain in other countries.
