Resourceful fraudsters try to get their victims' money by calling back on their cell phone. The phenomenon of so-called “ping calls” also occurs in Central Hesse.

The cell phone only rings once or twice. Just short enough that the person you're calling doesn't have a chance to answer the call. The number of the missed call immediately appears in the caller list. And this is where the fraud begins: The number begins with the country code, for example: “+1721” or “+691”, so that the victims initially get the impression that it is a cell phone number or a connection from Frankfurt am Main. Intrigued, you call back and immediately fall into the fraud trap. The provider can charge over three euros per minute for the connection to a connection registered somewhere in the world.

Police advise paying close attention to the phone number that appears in the missed calls list. If in doubt, don't call back and block the number. It is also possible to search for the number on the Internet. This often leads to the first indication that you could be falling for a fraudster.

By the way : Apple smartphone owners have a small advantage. iPhones show directly which country the subscriber is calling from.
