Gamers who are under the age of twelve are only allowed to play for one hour a day!

Chinese tech giant Tencent Games has imposed severe limits on gaming time for younger gamers in a bid to curb screen addiction and promote healthy habits. Now all player identities should be checked in order to fully enforce these restrictions.

Playing times are precisely defined

By verifying the identity and age of millions of players, the world's largest video game company is responding to the Chinese government's increased control of games. Anyone under the age of twelve is then only allowed to play for one hour a day - and only between eight in the morning and nine in the evening. Players between the ages of 13 and 18 can enjoy the game worlds for two hours.

“Customer accounts are forcibly verified with a real name query to ensure they are who they claim to be. “Unverified users are not allowed to log in,” Tencent said.

The verification system was first implemented in September for the mobile game "Honour of Kings," which had become so popular among Chinese students that many left their homework to play it late into the night. The new guidelines will also apply to nine additional mobile gaming titles by the end of the year, before expanding to all mobile and PC games next year.

Facial recognition in use

“The protection of minors is an important task to which society as a whole pays great attention. We have a high level of responsibility and obligation,” said Tencent.

The company derives most of its revenue from video games, but has recently experienced steep losses. Since March 2018, Tencent was no longer allowed to publish new game titles as a result of a decision by the Chinese authorities. This regulatory blockage could last into next year.

With the strict verification of players now planned, the company hopes to be able to erase the restrictions soon. Tencent has not yet finally announced how it will determine which user is currently on the device. However, facial recognition has already been tested in “Honour of Kings”. Industry experts are therefore already assuming that the approach could probably also be used for other game titles.
