Have you also received an email from the police or the Federal Criminal Police Office accusing you of child pornography, pedophilia and exhibitionism? The email is fake and the accusations are fictitious. Don't reply and it's best to delete the message.
A few weeks ago, our cooperation partner Watchlist-Internet reported on the fake email from the Federal Criminal Police Office with the subject “FEDERAL CRIMINAL OFFICE SUBMISSION” . The Watchlist Internet is still receiving numerous reports of this attempted fraud, in which the recipients of the message are accused of various crimes. Particularly clever: The criminals send these messages from official email addresses such as beatrice.beorchia@polizei.gv.at.
The message begins with variations of a short text and also appears with different subject lines. Here are two examples:
From: office.gouv.andreas.holzer@gmail.com
Please note the attached invitation
.
Kind regards,
Federal Office of Police
Or
From: beatrice.beorchia@polizei.gv.at
Subject: Complaint
Hello,
Due to the facts of your culpable behavior.
(see attached document).
Kind regards,
Beatrice Beorchia
Federal Police Systems and Identification
However, all of these fraud attempts have something in common: the emails contain a PDF file in which the recipients are accused of allegedly possessing “images and videos of an exhibitionist or child pornographic nature” as well as “erotic messages and scenes of exhibition and masturbation via webcam and instant chat sessions”. These accusations are fictitious.
Recipients of the message are asked to respond to office.andreas.holzer@gmail.com, office.gouv.andreas.holzer@gmail.com or bundeskritikamt@exekutivdirektion.email. However, these email addresses are not official police email addresses! Authorities and official bodies never send messages from addresses ending with gmail.com.
Caution! Do not respond to the message or respond to the criminals' demands!
I answered – what to do?
If you have replied to the first email, there is no reason to worry. In another email, the criminals try to further unsettle their victims. The fraudsters try to get their victims to transfer large sums of money. Her answer was as follows:
This is the response to the message you received.
Please read the attachment to the email (legal proceedings) and then respond to us as soon as possible.
After the 48-hour period, we will initiate formal proceedings, i.e. issue an arrest warrant.
Your contact details and your portrait photo will be forwarded to the child protection organizations.
as well as forwarded to the mass media to make your actions widely known.
Best regards
This message also contains a PDF file in which the criminals demand €28,950 from their victims. The document also states that a letter must be written confirming the payment with a signature. Last name, first name and full address are also required, but be careful! Do not under any circumstances pass on this personal data to the fraudsters! You could subsequently be affected by identity theft.
We advise you not to reply to the email! The accusations are fictitious. Move the message to your spam folder.
How to protect yourself
You can protect yourself from similar fraudulent messages with the following tips:
- If you receive attachments from unknown email addresses, you should not open them. Because the attachments could contain malware. If in doubt, call and ask whether the email actually comes from this authority.
- Check attachments from unknown senders with Virustotal . Here you will find instructions on how to use Virustotal safely!
- If you have responded and sent data, copies of ID or money, you should definitely inform the police and file a free criminal complaint .
