Be careful of manipulated cash dispensers!

Since Friday (November 1st, 2019), ten cases have been reported to the police in which the perpetrators removed the privacy screen at ATMs and presumably manipulated the card slot.

In a bank branch on Epplestrasse, the perpetrators manipulated the card slot at an ATM on Saturday morning (November 2nd, 2019), so that an 80-year-old did not receive his card back around 10 a.m. after the money had been issued. The man initially assumed that the ATM had withheld the card, but he later discovered that the perpetrators had withdrawn several thousand euros in cash from his account.

In another branch on Epplestrasse around 10:45 a.m., the fraudsters probably spied out the PIN of a previously unknown woman at the ATM and distracted her while the card was being issued in order to then steal her bank card.

Witnesses or victims, especially the unknown woman, are asked to contact the criminal police officers on +497189905778.

The police advise:

Therefore, make sure that others cannot observe you entering your PIN and ensure that you maintain a sufficient safe distance from the next customer. While entering the PIN, completely cover the keypad with your other hand or an object (e.g. wallet, piece of paper) as a privacy screen. This makes “spying” much more difficult. Do not use an ATM where anything appears unusual, such as attached strips or panels, protruding or loose parts, traces of adhesive around the card slot. If you suspect tampering, you should not use the machine. Notify the police and bank employees in order to be able to secure possible leads.

More tips:

Check your account statements regularly and contact your bank immediately if there are any abnormalities. If you suspect that your card details have been spied on, have the card blocked immediately via your bank or the nationwide blocking emergency number 116 116 and report it to the police.
