Facebook is currently testing a tool similar to its subsidiary Instagram called “Popular Photos”.

The application shows users who clicked on a photo in their news feed a series of related images. According to a report from “ TechCrunch ,” Facebook wants to make its platform more visually appealing with this approach to Instagram.

“At least keep older users”

“Instagram is becoming increasingly popular while Facebook is stagnating. That's why Facebook adopts features that work well. The company has already done this with WhatsApp and TikTok. In the public perception, Facebook is more of a network for older users, but now they are running away too. By moving closer to Instagram, Facebook wants to at least keep older users on the platform.”

says social media consultant Felix Beilharz in an interview with pressetext.

With Popular Photos, users can access an image in their newsfeed and view it in full-screen mode against a black background. Normally they would scroll back to the news feed, but with the new feature they can see more related images created by or shared by friends. Captions can only be around 65 characters long so that the gallery doesn't contain too much text.

Image trend on modern platforms

The new application was already tested in October 2019, but further tests will follow. According to the report, the platform is too cluttered with text and links. Users have to scroll a lot to get to entertaining content. In contrast, “younger” platforms such as Instagram or TikTok rely primarily on images, which makes the visual experience more pleasant. With “Popular Photos” Facebook wants to catch up to this trend.
