Killnet strikes again. The digital battlefield surrounding the Ukraine war continues to expand. According to recent reports, the pro-Russian hacker group Killnet recently became active in Estonia. (HERE)

Killnet attacks public and private websites

As part of their attack, they apparently shut down over 200 websites, both private and government sites. The trigger is believed to be the removal of a Russian war memorial in the city of Narva, the center of the Russian-speaking minority in Estonia.

The weapon: Ddos attacks

It would not be the first time that Killnet has become internationally active: the hacktivists have previously attacked Norway (HERE) and Lithuania ( HERE) . Their weapon of choice was DDoS attacks, as the threat intelligence reports from security researchers at Check Point Research confirm. ( HERE )

Digital warfare is becoming standard

The continued attacks by hacktivists and state-run hacking groups should serve as a warning to both governments and businesses: the digital conflict can easily spill beyond current national shores. Ransomware, phishing and DDoS attacks are now an integral part of the arsenal of every government and group and accordingly their own infrastructure and digital ecosystem must be secured with resilient and holistic solutions.
