SWR Marktcheck checked three advertising statements for their plausibility. Here are the results:

Plasters that can detoxify?

Detox patches can supposedly detoxify the body if you stick them on the soles of your feet. Ten pairs cost 17.95 euros.

According to dermatologist Sebastian Kahl, there are many different toxins in the body that are stored in different places. This would require many mechanisms to combat these poisons. A plaster alone cannot do that.

Remove toxins through sweat?

The manufacturer Nuubu advertises on its website that the patches support the body's natural way of removing toxins through activated sweat glands.

Toxins occur in small quantities in sweat, says the dermatologist. But that doesn't mean that sweat has a detoxification function. This is mainly in the liver or kidneys.

Misleading advertising claims

The plasters change color using a trick: one of the ingredients - wood vinegar - turns black as soon as it comes into contact with water. The moisture in our feet is to blame for the discoloration and not poison.

The manufacturer states that they do not violate any applicable laws or regulations. However, the Center for Combating Unfair Competition considers some advertising statements to be misleading. However, tracking is difficult because the provider is based abroad.

Can a baby hat block electromagnetic radiation?

Silver threads in the baby hat are intended to protect against radiation. The price: 25.90 euros. The promise of the traditional brand Petit Bateau in the online shop: “99.5 percent of electromagnetic radiation is blocked.”

To shield yourself from electromagnetic radiation, you have to wear a full-body suit and also protect your face, says physicist Eugen Wintersberger.

Does the foot saver keep what it promises?

The processed piece of wood with exercise instructions costs 49.90 euros. It is intended to save the feet in cases of “foot pain and/or misalignments such as arches, fallen arches, splay feet, hallux valgus, heel and forefoot problems”.

The brochure contains valuable tips, says sports and exercise scientist Domenico Gurzi. The piece of wood is made of high quality. But whether it is really a foot saver is questionable. You have to be careful with such promises.

The gait analysis after the first hour of doormat shows: The tester has a greater imbalance than before. Gurzi explains that this means he has too much pressure on his right foot compared to his left foot - so things have gotten worse.

Get a doctor's opinion

Publicist and political scientist Katharina Nocun has a valuable tip: If friends and relatives fall for products that promise healing and protection against alleged dangers, one thing is particularly important: when it comes to medical products, you should continue to go to the doctor and listen to what he has to say. So pay close attention to how much money you shouldn't spend on which product.
