Anyone who spreads content on the Internet that is taken out of context is generating fake news!
For some time now we have been receiving countless requests for a video that is not only shared on Facebook. It is about the claim that the video shows how a production of drowning refugees is being filmed.

With the title “Refugees drowning? No, fake news is being produced for the system media.” It's also circulating on YouTube:
The fact check:
The colleagues at Correctiv solved the puzzle on August 16, 2018:
These are recordings from a documentary!
Research by EchtNow and Jacques Pezet revealed that the video shown was actually filmed on the Greek island of Crete. Namely in Ierapetra.
The nearby Levante restaurant responded to a press inquiry on August 8, 2018 via Facebook Messenger.
The restaurant replied to us via messenger that the video shows the filming of a documentary film presented at the Ierapetras Documentary Film Festival. The camerawoman seen in the video is the director and producer. The restaurant also explained to us that the film is about Greek refugees during the Greco-Turkish War of 1919 to 1922.
The restaurant sent EchtNow the link to the website of the Ierapetra Documentary Film Festival. This made it possible to identify the film crew shown in the film who actually produced “Land of the Painful Virgin Mary”
RealNow continues to write:
The website also features photos of director and producer Eleni Vlassi and cameraman George Mpalothiaris. This is how we were able to identify the two in the video.

The film crew confirmed the filming of the historical film!
Through various correspondence with cameraman George Mpalothiaris as well as another cameraman Giannis Kassis and finally the film director Eleni Vlassi, it was confirmed several times that the historical film was being shot.
“This is our film crew filming a documentary about refugees from the 1900s who came from Anatolia to Crete.” He writes that the film was shot in Ierapetra in 2017 and 2018.
According to EchtNow, Eleni Vlassi was surprised by the use of the images from her film shoot. In a statement dated August 13, 2018, she explained that the video circulating on the Internet shows the shooting of her film “Land of the Painful Mary”, that it was filmed without her permission and also warned that she could take legal action against anyone , who spread false reports about the shooting of their film.
She emphasizes that the filmed scene has no connection to today's migrants, but rather addresses the situation of Greek refugees from Asia Minor in 1922.
“Filming of the documentary began in September 2017 and was completed on July 24, 2018. The final shoot in the sea was done to get some better shots.”

Statement from director Eleni Vlassi via email on August 13, 2018
Result:
In Crete, a film crew actually staged a scene with refugees in the sea. However, this is not a depiction of current scenes of drowning refugees, but rather the situation of Greek refugees from Asia Minor in 1922.
Anyone who distributes the video without the background knowledge that it is footage of a documentary is generating false news! Anyone who leaves out the source leaves room for interpretation, which can of course also result in the claim that this is how fake news is produced for system media.
