Unfortunately, social networks are usually the place where depression and difficult life circumstances really become difficult, especially when trolls make your life even more difficult.
Whether you're fat, an immigrant, or someone who loves the same sex, there will always be people on the internet who want to make things harder for you. Especially in male-dominated football, where people hug and slap each other on the field and shower together afterwards, no footballer really dares to come out as homosexual, if only for fear of being shunned by the other players afterwards to be hated by fans - but not 17-year-old Jake Daniels.

Gay – So what?

Jack Daniels, 17, who recently signed his first professional contract with Blackpool FC, revealed he is gay : “ I feel ready to tell people my story ”.

The reactions to this are mixed, but mostly positive.

Many people don't care at all whether a footballer is heterosexual or homosexual:

"It is normal"
"It is normal"

An interesting question asked in the comment: “Aren’t footballers people?”
Yes, of course they are - but in an environment in which masculinity is so celebrated and the fan base consists largely of men, that it is something special when a footballer comes out and thus incurs the wrath of homophobic fans and colleagues.

But of course there are also users who see their fragile masculinity threatened, since you are only a real man if you love women, right? So a homosexual has no place in football!

"not anti-gay, but..."
“not anti-gay, but…”

No, of course have to be gay to play football. As many have already written, it doesn't even matter at all, because sexual orientation has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with athletic performance - so gays are allowed to play football too.

Of course, there are also enough users who have not yet fully understood their sexual orientation and believe that this is just a phase:

"I'm still in puberty"
“I’m still in puberty”

Ugh…. No, before we have to explain this in more detail, let's just react with a meme:

Does not work like that
Does not work like that

And what are the international reactions?
For that, let’s take a look at Twitter. For many Americans, football is not a real sport and is derisively referred to as “gay”:

“Football is pretty gay, so it’s a shock that more haven’t come out.”

But there are also many Americans who are big fans of English football and are cheering the outing:

“I am a US Conservative and a huge fan of English football, and I applaud this man's inspiring words. There is no ONE REASON why gay people who have never harmed anyone should be viewed or treated differently, and it is high time the discrimination ended.”

But an important factor that many people ignore: There is a lot of homophobia, especially in English football, which a user from Great Britain makes clear:

“In the UK at least, football is rife with homophobic abuse from spectators and NO Premier League player is openly gay. No one. The fact that he is gay shouldn’t even be in the news, but this boy’s courage to come out and face hostile crowds week after week is incredibly brave.”

And these homophobic insults that the user writes about are also on Twitter and Facebook, and there are really not too many of them. However, we will not show any examples of these here, as some of them go very far below the belt and are beyond good taste.

Conclusion

Many users are right when they write that this shouldn't actually be worth reporting. Yes, in a perfect world that is the case. But the recently mentioned, sometimes extremely homophobic comments make it clear that it necessary - if only to show those affected and all other homosexuals and bisexuals through the positive comments that they are not alone They are not hated by everyone, that they get support against the hatred of a minority!
