Babies and small children are particularly at risk in hot weather: they dehydrate more quickly and are more likely to get sunburn or sunstroke. The reason: Children sweat less than adults and therefore give off less heat. On the other hand, they generate more metabolic heat during physical activity than adults. In extreme heat and great exertion, the child's body is often no longer able to lower its temperature sufficiently. The information portal of the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) gives parents tips on how they can best protect their children from heat.

Tips for protecting children from sun and heat:

  • It is essential to make sure that the child drinks enough.
  • Never expose children younger than one year to direct sunlight.
  • Small children up to the age of four should avoid the intense midday sun between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and stay in the shade or - even better - indoors during this time. This not only protects against heat, but also against UV radiation .
  • Plan outdoor activities in the cooler mornings and evenings. Choose shady places if possible and always wear sun-appropriate clothing, even in the shade. This also includes a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30. Apply this 30 minutes before going outside.
  • Adequate sun protection is particularly important when spending time near or in water: water reflects UV radiation and thereby increases it. Always reapply cream to children after splashing around. Attention: The duration of protection specified by the SPF is not extended by reapplying, but only maintained.
  • It can quickly become extremely hot in a parked car. Under no circumstances should children be left in a parked car, as this can be life-threatening for them.
  • Children can cool down while playing with water. Important: Children should never be left unattended when splashing around with water.
  • If possible, stay in the coolest room in the apartment – ​​even at night. It is best to put babies or small children to sleep in the coolest room in the apartment and not with clothes or blankets that are too warm.
