The case: Facebook on, scrolled news stream, saw advertising for protective masks. Facebook closed. But it gets even better: I opened Facebook again, scrolled the news stream, saw another advertisement for protective masks. Facebook closed.

You can clearly see that there are massive advertisements for protective masks on social media platforms at the moment. This is exciting because this advertising is manipulative! Because there is no recommendation for such masks, the Robert Koch Institute writes :

However, there is insufficient evidence that wearing a mouth and nose mask significantly reduces the risk of infection for a healthy person wearing it. According to the WHO, wearing a mask in situations where it is not recommended can create a false sense of security that can lead to neglect of key hygiene measures such as good hand hygiene.

However, this doesn't bother advertisers at all, on the contrary. The advertisements create a “nevertheless” situation; you read messages like “It’s better to have and not need than to need and not have”.

And now here we are. Protective masks are now flying around where they are not needed. Because, among other things, advertisers suggest that it is better to have them and not need them.

However, this inevitably means that protective masks are hardly available elsewhere where they are needed. A joke? Apparently not!

The ENT specialist Dr. Christian Lübbers describes exactly this situation on Twitter. Since private individuals stock up on FFP2 masks, they are not available for the professional sector. He writes:

I no longer feel like spending hours searching for FFP2 masks on the Internet only to receive loud rejections by email despite being “available for delivery”.
@jensspahn I still have exactly 10 FFP2 masks for the entire practice. What should I do?

So please only buy what you really need. This doesn’t just apply to protective masks.
