The claim

Quote: "That's crazy - shouldn't it be fake: Federal government recommends puberty blockers to very young, insecure people" (Source: Tweet from Julia Klöckner, ex-CDU minister, October 12, 2022)

Our conclusion

No, the federal government does not recommend that young, insecure people take puberty blockers. The rainbow portal simply explained in simple, understandable language, like an encyclopedia, what options and also what information and advice options non-binary people have.

The German politician from the CDU, Julia Klöckner, reacts outraged by the Federal Ministry's rainbow portal. It's crazy, says Klöckner, because the federal government recommends that young and insecure people take puberty blockers.

Quite apart from the fact that the text to which Klöckner reacts so indignantly does not come from the traffic light government, but from the grand coalition and thus with the participation of her own party, we would like to go into more detail about the text and, above all, the type of text .

The Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth has slightly changed the text due to the criticism. We at Mimikama have already formulated the original text very clearly and understandably and have also found it extremely important for those affected and interested.

What is the Rainbow Portal?

It is an information website run by the federal government for the LGBTIQ community and anyone interested in the topic of same-sex lifestyles and gender diversity. People who do not feel comfortable in their biological body or have the feeling that they are non-binary can also inquire here.

A kind of lexicon was presented in a section on “Young and transsexual”. The options available to non-binary people were explained in very simple language and with the help of images. Since most non-binary people notice very early on that something is wrong with their feelings, this “encyclopedia” also states that there is the option of taking puberty blockers to prevent puberty and thus further physical development to interrupt in the direction of a woman or a man.

As is so often the case, in Klöckner's tweet the text was not presented in its entirety, but rather taken out of its context. Because this website not only discusses puberty blockers and hormones (as seen in your tweet), but much more.

For example, the question was examined as to how one can generally notice whether one is transsexual or not. It also explains how an official name change occurs. And it is also explained that there does not necessarily have to be an official name change, but that everyone can be called whatever they would like to be called in everyday life.

The most important aspect that the text says, however, is that no matter how those affected feel and no matter what they will do or not do at some point towards trans-gender, that all those affected are okay the way they are. That it's okay to feel like you're in the wrong body and that there are chances of being able to live your life the way you want to live your life and in which body. And here too it is explained that someone who, for example, For example, as a man, you don't necessarily have to take hormones or undergo gender reassignment, but rather that there is a much greater variety of ways of life.

The text goes into great detail about the possible insecurities of those affected and that these insecurities are okay. And that they can take their time with decisions and that there is a way of thinking outside of black and white and outside of girls and boys.

Does every teenager receive puberty blockers?

Klöckner's tweet creates the feeling that the federal government is practically asking young people to simply get puberty blockers from the pharmacy. Anyone who has ever visited a doctor and been prescribed medication knows that doctors do not prescribe medication without a clear diagnosis. That's why not every young person can, for example, B. go to the pharmacy and pick up Ritalin. This would require a very clear and precise AD(H)S diagnosis.

The text on the website “Young and trans-gendered” provides information about all possible variants that exist in connection with non-binarity. In addition, they also clearly point out that when making decisions, you should take your time and, above all, seek advice from an advisory center. The site does not recommend puberty blockers across the board, but rather provides much more information about many different options.

Conclusion

No, the federal government does not recommend that young, insecure people take puberty blockers. The rainbow portal simply explained, like an encyclopedia, in easy-to-understand language what options and also what information and advice options non-binary people have.
