The claim

It is said that President Vladimir Putin personally expressed his condolences at the funeral of Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin.

Our conclusion

The video showing Vladimir Putin at a funeral was not Prigozhin's. Rather, it was an event from 2013 in which Putin paid respect to his late judo coach.

Was it really Yevgeny Prigozhin's funeral? There are posts on the Internet that go viral and send the world into an uproar, even if the truth is completely different. This happened recently when a video emerged showing Russian President Vladimir Putin at a funeral. But was it really Yevgeny Prigozhin's funeral, as was claimed?

The viral confusion surrounding Putin and Prigozhin

A video showing Putin placing flowers on a coffin, greeting mourners and showing respect in front of an open coffin is currently circulating on social media. The myth? It was the funeral of Yevgeny Viktorovich Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner militia. But things are not always as they seem.

The real story behind the video

Upon closer inspection and a fact check, it turned out that the video actually dates from 2013. It shows Putin at the memorial service for his former judo coach Anatoly Rakhlin and not, as falsely claimed, at Prigozhin's funeral.

A video entitled "Putin shows respect for deceased mentor Rakhlin" published on August 10, 2013 on the YouTube channel "EpsilonNewsNetwork" has the same image content: Putin is next to the coffin at 28 seconds in the YouTube video and at 16 Seconds can be seen in the social media clip. At 1:18 or 42 seconds he can be seen alone in both clips.

Why was the video displayed incorrectly?

The motives behind the video's misleading portrayal can be varied: from manipulating public opinion to outright misinformation through social media platforms. In the digital age, it is easier than ever to share, edit and distribute such videos, often without knowing the real facts.

The importance of fact checking

In times of fake news and disinformation, it is more important than ever that we can rely on reliable and accurate information. Fact checking has become an essential tool for separating truth from fiction and protecting us from misrepresentations.
