In the weeks since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, we have repeatedly encountered deepfake videos about Zelensky and Putin, which were sometimes more, sometimes less successful. Putin is said to have announced Russia's surrender in mid-March ( we reported to have announced Ukraine's surrender - both videos were deepfakes.
And now there is a video of Putin admitting to being a terrorist - but this time it is very clearly a deepfake, and also shared with a note from the Ukrainian government.
Putin's deepfake video
It's such a tricky thing with deepfake videos: the technology is impressive, but also dangerous, because well-made videos are very difficult to expose as fake. Fortunately, however, truly professional videos of this type have so far only been possible with a lot of effort.
But the video with the Russian president, which is being distributed on Twitter With a clear wink and a disclaimer that the video is not real, the video shows Putin explaining in Russian-accented English that his master plan is to restore the Soviet empire: “ The truth is that I am a terrorist and will continue to terrorize the entire world.”
The Ukrainian government writes:
“Putin is telling the truth, right? Well, we tried to imagine what he would say if he did.”
The deepfake was created with Reface , an app for Android and iOS that allows anyone to create deepfakes that are sometimes more or less realistic.
Conclusion
The deepfake is a rather humorous fake with a very serious background that was created with an app and does not want to give the impression of being real.
