It's all over the media: Christian private school expels 15-year-olds for "lifestyle violations."

Kayla Kenney celebrated her 15th birthday. In one photo you can see her smiling and sitting in front of her rainbow cake. She wears a matching sweater with a rainbow pattern. So far so good. But surprisingly, that's exactly why Kayla is expelled from school.

“Lifestyle Violations”

This is what the school describes Kayla's behavior as. The photo of the rainbow cake from Kayla's birthday party was posted on Facebook, and someone then forwarded it to Whitefield Academy, Kentucky, Kayla's mother, Kimberly Alford, tells the Louisville Courier-Journal.

The school said in an email what it thought about it. It “demonstrates an attitude of morality and cultural acceptance that contradicts the beliefs of Whitefield Academy.”

The parents had three days to file an appeal against the expulsion. However, in Kayla's case this was rejected.

Homosexual pride and other offenses as justification

Principal Bruce Jacobson justified the school's decision by saying the cake and sweater "represented gay pride." However, several of Kayla's “offenses” would come into play here:

“Unfortunately, she has violated our student code of conduct on several occasions over the past two years. Our code of conduct is comparable to other private Christian schools in our region.”

Kayla's mother explains that her daughter cut her hair and was caught with an e-cigarette. Kayla wouldn't have caused any other problems. She is also not homosexually oriented. The baker lists the name “different colors” for the cake on the receipt. Alford added that the Whitefield Academy Parent Teacher Fellowship even posted a rainbow picture on its personal Facebook page. However, this was removed after her daughter was expelled from school.

Transfer to public school

“I felt like Whitefield Academy had a positive influence on her. But I think the religious beliefs they imposed on her there are very judgmental. I didn’t want that for her,” Kimberly Alford explained.

Kayla now attends a different public school and, according to her mother, is adapting well there, but still seems a bit overwhelmed from time to time.
