The names of products at Christmas time always cause unrest: Are Western Christian customs being abolished? What's wrong with Klapperklaus?

The Rattlesnake. This is the hollow chocolate figure with Smarties in the body. Klapperklaus is now (again) criticized for being a symbol of left-green politics that erases Christian culture. This is how you read, among other things:

After Ikea, Lidl goes one better.
Instead of Santa Claus or St. Nicholas, it is now Klapperklaus. We will not allow our Christian culture to be erased because of left-green politics.

The text can be found in an image that appeared Facebook This picture shows such a rattlesnake. It is not a fake, neither the price tag nor the motif itself have been edited:

Klapperklaus nonsense
Klapperklaus nonsense

Fact check Klapperklaus:

NO, the Smarties Klapperklaus is not an Islamized Santa Claus, but a portmanteau of rattling Santa Claus (it rattles because there are Smarties in it). This one has definitely been called that since at least 2004.

Product names are also not really suitable for recording a supposed loss of tradition. Because, and you have to look at this very objectively, every company naturally tries to sell as many of its products as possible.

Names are chosen so that they fit into a corresponding season (example: Autumn Star ), are also accessible to people who do not believe in Santa Claus or something similar (see Zipfelmann ), or simply characterize the product. Just like Klapperklaus, because he rattles.

The strategy

Of course, there is a certain strategy behind all these small accusations, which often turn out to be false reports. Here we only ever see small parts of a mosaic, lots of small false evidence that can be refuted quite easily on a micro level.

But they are part of a large mosaic that takes years to form. It is a narrative of loss of tradition, coupled with the narrative of a population exchange. The sheer amount of (sometimes very absurd) fictitious evidence ensures that the narratives behind it continue to solidify.

The aim is the existing structures: it is about providing (sham) proof that cultural identities are disappearing and should even be exchanged. The Klapperklaus is just one of many fictitious evidence. We already analyzed this form of strategy two years ago and therefore refer to our article “ The sticks that are being held up: phantom discussions ”.
