Musk uses temporary reading restrictions to combat data abuse and improve user experience.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk has surprisingly announced new temporary reading restrictions for the platform.

This measure is intended to combat the “extreme extent” of data scraping and system manipulation on the platform. Musk explained that hundreds of organizations are “extremely aggressive” in harvesting data from Twitter, impacting the user experience.

Only 6,000 tweets per day for verified users

The restrictions vary depending on the type of user. Verified accounts can currently only read 6,000 posts per day, while unverified accounts and newly registered users are limited to 600 and 300 posts per day, respectively. However, Musk stressed that these restrictions are only temporary and will be increased soon.

Gradual increase in reading restrictions

Musk announced that the number of readable tweets will soon be increased to 8,000 for verified users, 800 for unverified users, and 400 for new unverified users. He described this drastic measure as a “temporary emergency measure” that had become necessary to curb data scraping and improve user experience.

Criticism of AI companies like OpenAI

Musk also used the announcement to express his frustration with AI companies like OpenAI that use Twitter data to train their large-scale language models. Musk has been critical of the use of Twitter data for artificial intelligence in the past and sees the new reading limit as a way to curb data misuse.

New measures to increase revenue and improve user experience

The announcement of the reading limits follows a series of moves Twitter has taken under Musk's leadership to win back advertisers and increase subscription revenue. One of these measures is the introduction of verification icons as part of the Twitter Blue program. However, the latest measure is primarily aimed at improving user experience and limiting data misuse. The impact of these changes on Twitter's long-term user experience and business success remains unclear.
