Around 100,000 interviewers will be traveling throughout Germany for the 2022 census from the deadline of May 15, 2022. The so-called survey representatives conduct short personal interviews with the residents at the selected addresses. The interviewers always identify themselves with a survey officer ID card, which is only valid in combination with an official photo ID.
“The interviewers always announce their visit to the respondents in writing in advance ,” says Katja Wilken, overall project manager for the 2022 census at the Federal Statistical Office. “You don’t ring the doorbell unannounced.” The announcement includes the appointment with a date and a specific time slot as well as the interviewer’s contact details. The appointment can be rescheduled by arrangement. If in doubt, the responsible collection agency can be contacted. The interviewers also do not call the respondents unless the respondents have already contacted them by telephone.
The interviewers are carefully selected and trained
The interviewers for the 2022 census are carefully selected, hired and trained as volunteers by the municipal census offices. A police clearance certificate can also be requested when recruiting. “ The municipalities have a lot of experience when it comes to selecting election workers and other volunteers ,” says Katja Wilken. that interviewers must offer a “ guarantee of reliability and confidentiality” . So you are sworn to secrecy. “The interviewers and the local municipalities are making a decisive contribution to the success of the 2022 census. I would like to thank them for their active commitment,” emphasizes Katja Wilken.
Surveys can be completed quickly and with little contact on your doorstep
The personal surveys are short, low-contact and can be completed at the door. “Respondents do not have to let the interviewer into their apartment,” explains Katja Wilken. After the short personal interview, the respondents can then simply answer the further questions online. In general, questions about bank details or income will not be asked in the 2022 census!
All questions are published in the sample questionnaire on the census website.
Against the background of the corona pandemic, interviewers are obliged to comply with the legal regulations on infection protection.
