Then it's about a new subscription request or a new follower, for example. Often you don't know exactly who is following you on Facebook, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, etc. eBakery would like to help you find out whether it is a fake account.
What are the signs of fake accounts?
Fakes can be found on all social networks. People then provide false information about themselves in their profiles. Some pretend to be completely different people. Then stolen pictures are uploaded or incorrect age information is given. Such profiles are then referred to as “fake profiles”.
Although it's not that easy to tell at first glance, there are some clues that can tell you whether it's a "real" person behind the profile or just someone who doesn't have anything "serious" in mind . The first indications of a fake account can be the following:
- Many fake accounts use names such as Lena, Lisa, Ben or Timo because many people know someone like that at least briefly.
- There are no pictures on the profiles.
- The people in the existing pictures look too good, like models.
- The profiles have fewer/no subscribers, but more people are subscribed.
- You will find very few or no posts on the profiles.
If there are posts, there are usually no comments and only a few likes. - The people themselves do not post anything in the story.
- The people themselves are not tagged in any other photos.
Fake accounts don’t always have to disguise themselves as people
It may even be that fake accounts don't always disguise themselves as people. Stalkers often hide behind beauty or fashion accounts. Where pictures of hairstyles, make-up, shoes or fashion are posted. This can also be the case, for example, with restaurant pages, travel blogs or advice profiles.
Inappropriate comments
Another indication of a fake account can be strange comments that are left. They are often inappropriate, formulated very simply and can be used anywhere. For example: “nice”, “great post”, “send pm” or “great work”.
Are fake accounts actually legal?
In most cases, fake accounts are not legal. Fake profiles can violate the right to your own image if images of other people are used. Often, when comments are made with a fake account, false representations or insults occur. In such cases, the general personal rights of “fake” people are also violated. If something like this happens to people, they can assert extensive claims for removal, injunctive relief and claims for damages. Fake profiles are not only mean, but also punishable, especially if they are used to commit fraud.
Unfortunately, you will probably never be completely safe from fake accounts. But you can make it more difficult for potential stalkers by making your account private. If you don't want to do that, you can at least regularly check who is looking at the stories. Every new follower should be examined carefully.
