When the first videos of young soldiers appeared, one could have assumed that they were pure propaganda from Ukraine to unsettle Russians, and this is certainly a strategy. But it is becoming increasingly clear that the images and videos are real and paint a sad picture: young Russians are being burned out in a senseless conflict.

A soldier gets tea and food

A well-known video that has been debated for days as to whether it is real - and it is. You can see a young soldier who, it is reported , has surrendered or been captured and is being given tea and something to eat by Ukrainians:

In the video, a young Ukrainian woman with dyed purple hair holds out a phone so he can talk to his mother. A Ukrainian police car can be seen in the background. His mother's name is Natasha, here are some of the sentences we were able to translate:

  • “Bring the people home, you see that your son is alive, healthy, nothing will happen to him. Get up, get up, people, block the roads, bridges, young soldiers have been kidnapped, columns of your Russian soldiers, broken into pieces.”
  • “He didn’t even know why he came here.”
  • “Natasha, good luck with God, everything is good, everything is good, everything is good. Natasha will contact you later. If he’s still alive, we’ll get back to you later, OK?”

Another common video, translated by a native Russian speaker, is now also very common:

“They kill their own wounded”

It cannot be verified whether the statements in the video are real or part of propaganda, as the video, recognizable by the logo, was created directly by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. You can see a young soldier who is also on the phone with his mother and tells her about the events:

The video was translated by Ivan Doan , an actor who speaks several languages including Russian, Ukrainian, English and German.

Some of his statements to his mother on the phone:
His mother should also take action, contact his regiment and ask for a prisoner exchange. But she shouldn't scream or say that they are leaving their dead lying there, otherwise the FSB (Federalnaya slushba besopasnosti Rossijskoi, the Russian domestic secret service) would be after her.

The website of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense

Some photos that are being distributed come directly from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense website. The title of the page (see HERE ) immediately points out that she is 18 and over.

The ministry also shows pictures of dead soldiers, although these are blurred, captured badges, ID cards, destroyed tanks and captured soldiers. In between there is the headline “Russia no longer has a professional military. "Putin has moved to use PMCs (private military companies) and the Putin Youth" .

At the end of the page there is the request: “As long as there is still a chance, Ukraine can help repatriate the bodies of fallen military personnel. Hurry up!"

The map of videos

The French fact-checkers “ The Observers ” have set themselves the task of verifying and mapping the locations of the large number of videos from Ukraine using OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) techniques. The result is an interactive map (see HERE ) where everyone can see when which verified videos were recorded and where in Ukraine.
