At the beginning of August it was announced that there had been a large-scale cyber attack on the database of the “Reddit” platform. Many of our inquiries centered around the question of whether Reddit had really been hacked.
Is that true or not?
Unfortunately yes , but fortunately it only affects older data that has been spied out by the perpetrators. To be precise, this is data from 2007 and before .
The following was captured:
– Usernames
– Encrypted passwords – Email addresses
– Public and private messages
However, “email digests” (a type of personalized newsletter) from June 2018 were also stolen. The logs of these newsletters contain user names as well as the associated email addresses and content of the email, as reported by “ Gamestar ”, among others.
I'm concerned! Crap, what should I do?
First of all:
stay calm.
As they say in the case of a fire, you can only act sensibly with a cool head. Furthermore, e-mails have already come from Reddit or will come in the future, instructing you to change your password.
By the way, this step, i.e. changing the password, should usually be done regularly, every 3-6 months. Once this has been done, other passwords should also be changed on other platforms or similar where the same or a similar password was used.
How did the data theft actually happen?
Hackers had hacked the account details of some Reddit employees despite two-factor authentication. The SMS was intercepted for verification. This is how the hackers got their hands on the data. This is actually a safe option, but unfortunately it also has its weak points.
