Several dogs should show the same clinical picture in a short period of time. Is there an epidemic in Remscheid?
For a few days now we have been receiving countless inquiries about this post, which is currently being shared on social networks:

Attention….important INFO
There seems to be something serious going on
…
Attention Remscheid!!!! Please share!!!!
There is currently a very aggressive bacterium going around in Remscheid that affects DOGS.
It begins with refusal of food and only 36 hours later do the animals develop diarrhea.
During this time, the bacteria is already working on the intestinal walls of your dogs. Then later vomiting.
It also hit my Momo.
He hasn't eaten since Sunday. Had a starting weight of 7.9 kg - today on Thursday he only weighs 3.4 kg!!!! This despite daily visits to the vet and treatment with infusions, cortisone, antibiotics, build-up injections, and stuffing agents.
Whatever liquid he consumes comes out of the intestines as blood in the short term.
To the vet again this evening. Again tomorrow. If things haven't improved by tomorrow, he will be released.
Momo would be 16 next month. Yesterday we went for an infusion at the same time as 4 other dogs.
Everyone had the same clinical picture. Other dogs were helped and are doing well again. Newly sick dogs again today!!!
Please, this is a more than serious illness.
The bacterium is picked up by sniffing. Please take care of your dogs and go to the doctor at the first signs!!!!

The fact check
At the moment there are a lot of dogs in Remscheid and the surrounding area, but also in my area in Berlin, who are suffering from bloody diarrhea and vomiting. In humans we would call this stomach flu.
Especially in such weather conditions, it often happens that germs can multiply in puddles after heavy rainfall, which are then ingested by the dogs. Germs can also get into rainwater through runoff from agriculture and then cause exactly these symptoms. This is not at all unusual in these weather conditions.
If, as in this case, an animal is already very old (16 years), then in exceptional cases it can be fatal.
But there is absolutely no reason to panic and there is nothing going around that is new or extremely dangerous.
A few days of diet and medication for the nausea and diarrhea are usually enough. In severe cases, fluids can also be given via infusions to prevent the dog from drying out.
In this case, a sample was sent to the laboratory to investigate which bacteria or virus is responsible for this stomach flu.
Such increased diarrhea is quite normal given the current weather conditions and is usually completely harmless.
In very sick or old dogs, the course can also be fatal, but this is more likely due to the underlying illnesses or age. The body can then no longer defend itself as well against these diseases.
What can you do quickly at home?
Very important, a dog with acute diarrhea should and must always be allowed to drink and eat. You can cook chicken with rice as a light diet, or you can also cook Morosche soup (carrot soup).
It is important that the diets should not be given for longer than three days.
A very mild fennel tea can also calm the gastrointestinal tract, preferably with a little sugar and salt to balance the electrolytes.
Some dogs prefer a meat broth with rice, which is also completely okay.
And please contact your veterinarian quickly if the diarrhea is very severe, bloody, or accompanied by vomiting.
With kind thanks to my colleague !
