As if the rising cost of living amid ongoing inflation wasn't expensive enough, spam callers also want to steal consumers' savings. A popular means of doing this is the spoofing process, in which often only the last digit of a phone number is replaced with another. Clever Dialer, the app for spam protection and caller ID, collects ten phone numbers every month that can be safely blocked. In October, Frankfurt phone numbers with the area code 069 particularly caught the eye: 069244375048, 069244375049 and 06924437540 were reported a total of 8,893 times last month - that's 27.54 percent of the complaints from the top 10 spam numbers.

● 015215173526 (cost trap):
“The woman on the phone is about to start shooting.
I manage to interrupt her to ask her names and tell her that I want to record the call. She explains to me very firmly that I'm not allowed to do that without her consent. 'Okay,' I say, 'then I'll hang up now.' God, she has a lot of staying power!" ● 01635844545 (competition):
"I supposedly wanted to extend my contract to play the lottery from January because I supposedly missed the notice period for a payment-free game.
They wanted to compare my account details. I said I didn't have my card with me, and she hung up immediately." ● +442920028363 (cost trap) :
"Two years ago I fell into such a cost trap.
With trouble finding a lawyer and €250 poorer, I got away well. Now they're calling me again. I threatened three employees with a lawyer, but they still get annoyed. I'm not going to answer it anymore. There's no point in answering. You can see now.” ● 069244375048 (cost trap):
“Call 5 times a day, at least.
Alleged energy consultants. I blocked the number." ● 069244375049 (cost trap):
"The lady wanted to talk to me about future energy prices, but was only interested in my data such as meter number, monthly.
deduction etc. I didn't agree to it, even though she promised me incredible savings. Just stay strong and don't let yourself be persuaded, otherwise you'll have a rude awakening later." ● 01637875622 (competition):
"Apparently the legal department.
Addressed me by name. Claims to be able to shorten the contract term of a competition subscription that was accidentally taken out for €74.99 per month from 12 to 3 months. With immediate payment by direct debit. For that he would still need the IBAN. CAUTION!" ● 06924437540 (Other):
"Alleged electricity supplier, wanted our meter number and when I said I'd check with our electricity supplier first, he suddenly wasn't directly the electricity supplier anymore, but something about it.
Don't go into it." ● 04029999112 (Other):
"This phone call is about fishing for data.
Very dubious.” ● 01773991844 (competition):
“Funny scam.
Always want to talk to my husband. Know the name! Never took part in a competition... When they hear my voice, they either hang up straight away or say they'll call back later." ● 01782480923 (Other):
"Apparently I was drawn for a big competition. Be careful, fraud: cost trap.”
