• If you order something online that you don't like, you can often return it.
  • This is called revocation.
  • But simply returning the goods is not enough. You have to tell the dealer that you don't want to keep them.
  • And the right of withdrawal does not apply to all things that can be ordered online.

right of cancellation when ordering online (and also from mail order catalogs or similar, but not when shopping in store!) : This is how long you have to cancel the purchase without giving reasons. However, it is not enough to simply return the goods. The law requires that you inform the retailer that you do not want to keep the goods. This notification can be made by telephone, email, post or fax. It must be sent to the dealer within two weeks. It is also sufficient if you put a note with the message in the package with the goods. However, there are exceptions for things that cannot be returned or cannot be returned well, such as groceries, flight reservations, a paddling course with a fixed date or even concert tickets.

With digital things such as downloads, you may also not have a right of withdrawal. The provider can rule out this if he makes the desired files available to you immediately after your order. The fact that you will then lose your right of withdrawal must be made clear to you and you must actively agree - for example by clicking on a corresponding checkmark in an information text to order. There is more about this in this text.

Let's stick with goods that don't expire and can be sent again.

And what about the postage?

Yes, now comes the big “but”: the postage. The question is who pays if you send the goods back. According to the law, the retailer can demand that the customer do this - regardless of the value of the goods ordered. The prerequisite is that these conditions are also stated in the general terms and conditions and that exactly the goods that you ordered were delivered. However, if the retailer has agreed to cover the return shipping costs, you would of course not have to pay the return postage.

But what about the postage that the retailer charged you when shipping the goods? If you chose standard shipping back then, the retailer must reimburse you for the postage costs for delivery. The retailer does not have to pay back any surcharges for express deliveries or similar.

An example: Anyone who thinks they can order ten CDs and then send each one back individually if they no longer like them has several problems: Firstly, the postage for each CD, secondly, you only have two weeks to do it - and thirdly, you have to You still have to make sure that you get your money back for the CDs anyway, because paying on account is rare. Above all, there would be a completely different obstacle: CDs sealed with adhesive tape or similar can only be returned with the seal intact! Listening and then giving it back doesn't work anyway.
