One of the most discussed events of the summer of 2023 were the forest fires in Rhodes, which raged for several days. A wave of media reports painted a bleak picture of the island. Fire and smoke dominated the scene. But a video, apparently taken during a flyover, tells a different story. What are the fires on the island of Rhodes really about? This question leads us to reassess the power and possible misinterpretations of a snapshot.
Media reports about the fires on Rhodes
The media tragically reported the events on Rhodes, where flames broke out and spread across the island. Images of towering columns of fire and people rushing to safety dominated the front pages and signaled a state of alarm.
A contradictory video
A video surfaced on that presents a different perspective. A single cloud of smoke was filmed from the cockpit of an aircraft, resulting from what appears to be a small fire. The anonymous pilot, described as the chief pilot of a major European airline, expresses his confusion and horror at the media portrayal, which he says is far from reality.

Analysis of the comparison - limitations of a snapshot
The picture from the cockpit is a snapshot. It captures a specific perspective and a specific point in time. But is it possible to derive a complete picture of the situation from this snapshot?
A snapshot is just a snapshot. It is unable to show the evolution of the fires or their impact over time. It also does not capture the various fires on the island, which burned with different intensity and at different times.
The narrative of the video in the context of the facts
fire information system provides a much more comprehensive picture of the Rhodes fires. The data shows that the fires affected a large part of the island, including the interior and the southeastern coast, between July 19 and 25.
The fires were not constant. They erupted at different times and burned in different places with different intensities. Greek media reports even estimated that around 10% of the island's entire area burned down . These facts contradict the depiction of the video, which only shows a single plume of smoke. The impression is that reports of the fires were exaggerated.
Satellite images reveal the true extent of the destruction
A July 23 satellite photo released by the European Space Agency (ESA) shows not only the hot spots at that time, but also the areas destroyed by the fires. It is estimated that an area of around 11,000 hectares has been lost by this point. This corresponds to approximately 7.85% of the total area of Rhodes.
This level of destruction expresses the drama and extent of the situation, which is not apparent from the individual images in the video.
Conclusion: Tell the real story
The video, posted on Facebook, has sparked an important discussion about how media events are presented and interpreted. Analysis of satellite data and on-site reports shows that the fires on Rhodes were far larger and more destructive than the snapshot suggests.
In a world increasingly dominated by visual media, it is important to think critically and not just rely on a snapshot. To obtain an accurate and complete picture of a situation, context must be taken into account and various sources of information must be consulted.
The fires on Rhodes were tragic and devastating. There were certainly misrepresentations in the media. But it is also misleading to claim that a short video can tell the whole story. It is a reminder that the truth is often more complex than it first appears, and that it is our job to explore and understand it in all its complexity.
