Unsolicited advertising calls are prohibited. Fraudsters don't care much about this; they then disguise their calls as promises of winnings.
Koblenz police report on current cases:
They have won! Who doesn't love hearing that? However, you should be careful with emails or calls that promise prizes. It could be a scam.
Frequent incidents
In the past few days, citizens in the PP Koblenz area have received an increasing number of calls from an alleged Hamburg notary. In these cases, those called were led to believe that they had won a high six-figure amount of cash in a competition run by a large publishing house. However, before the money is paid out, the citizens called should purchase a so-called “processing fee” in the form of two vouchers from an online mail order company worth 100 euros each and pass on the voucher numbers to the notary’s office.
Not everyone was fooled
In the cases that became known to the police, those called “smelled the roast early on” and hung up. The fraudsters constantly change the fake scenarios with the aim of getting their victims’ money.
How to protect yourself:
- Be aware: If you
haven't taken part in a lottery, you can't have won anything! - Never spend money to
claim a supposed win, do not pay any fees, do not dial
special numbers that are subject to charges! - Don't make any promises over the phone!
