There has been no Windows 7 support from Microsoft for a few weeks now. Fraudsters see this as their opportunity!

What the fake Windows 7 support is about:

Scammers pretend to be Microsoft employees over the phone. The Windows 7 operating system is used as an excuse to sell expensive support. If you fall into the trap, you could lose hundreds of euros.

Fraudulent calls from supposed Microsoft employees are not new and many people are already familiar with them. But these calls have taken on a new form as they now refer to the end of Windows 7 support .

This is how the “Windows 7 Support” scam works

There should still be enough users of the old operating system. Fraudsters also play with this speculation. That means:

Scammers initiate a fake pop-up window on a website. This in turn indicates a supposedly important security update for Windows 7. There is also a support number that should be called.

This is where the cost trap lurks: There are fraudsters at the other end of the phone who use clever conversation manipulation to get the caller to allow remote access (“remote maintenance”) to their computer.

Instead of helping, the supposed support causes a lot of damage to the computer, which ultimately ends up being expensive.

Therefore, please always pay attention to the following tips

The following tips don't just apply to Windows 7 fraud:

  • Reputable companies do not contact their customers without being asked. So if an alleged employee contacts you without you asking: hang up, delete the email or close the browser.
  • Under no circumstances should you give out private data, assets, TAN numbers or similar.
  • Microsoft error and warning messages do not contain phone numbers.
  • Do not allow unknown callers access (remote) to your computer.
  • Do not download any software in connection with such contact.
