The query was that this was great. However, it is somewhat inconceivable how this would work. “When the excavator cab is raised, where is it? Either in front of it, or at a height of...?? Makes no sense to me.”

Our research team then lit the keys and found Tim's story.

Conversion of an excavator

Tim Knutsen from Enebakk, Norway, has been paralyzed from the waist down since a car accident in 2006. This had a big impact on his job because Tim was an excavator driver. With his wheelchair it was impossible for him to reach the driver's cab.
However, his boss Nikolai Jakhelln was committed to ensuring that Tim could continue to do his job and had the construction machine converted accordingly.

This was published in a video on the site “rb.no” in 2014. Here you can see (from around 00:20) how Tim gets into the driver's cab of the heavy vehicle.

Later in the video (from around min. 1:50) it is shown how the driver's cab is lifted into place. What you can't clearly see in the photo we were sent is that there is a joint here. This is necessary so that the cabin can be pulled up but also backwards at the same time to get into place. In the video you can see exactly how the excavator and the removable driver's cab work.

The conversion of the construction machine was carried out by the company NASTA, which also reports on its website:

“Nasta AS supplied a crawler excavator in which the cab can be lowered to the ground. The cabin solution of the 21-tonne Hitachi ZX210LC-5 makes it easier for machine operator Tim Knutsen to get to his workplace.”

Tim's case is not the only one. In Germany, too, a construction machine driver was affected by paraplegia. Rafael therefore tried his hand at making jewelry and watches. But this task didn't make him happy. When he asked his former boss if there was any possibility of returning to his old job, the building was also undergoing renovations.
A Saxon company is installing a lift for the 25-ton wheel loader, and there is a cable pull for the wheelchair.

“There are always only two options: either bury your head in the sand or carry on.”
