On Facebook, fraudsters use false identities to write to middle-aged women, flirt with them and steal money that goes into foreign accounts.

We already reported frequently about this scam, which is called Romance Scam . Such contacts begin with harmless chats in which the fraudster usually pretends to be a US soldier; the wife often died and he lives alone with his son or daughter. A little later he is asked for money because he wants to leave the army and move to Germany. The money should then be transferred abroad because he is currently stationed there somewhere, usually in Africa.

Bavarian police report a current case from Amberg , where a 62-year-old woman fell victim to this scam: The fraudsters stole a mid-five-figure euro amount with their perfidious scam.

Since May 2018, the alleged soldier, who is supposedly stationed in Kabul and a member of the US armed forces, has been building up the scenario and thus gaining the trust of the retired woman. The currently unknown chat partner, whom the woman met on Facebook, persuaded her to make several transfers to foreign accounts with obviously made-up stories.

The scam is known to police nationwide. The perpetrators appear professional and repeatedly manage to deceive chat partners and gain their trust in a time-based process in order to ultimately defraud them of their savings.

The Amberg criminal police have started investigating this case and are warning against fraudsters pretending to be “loving”.
