Romance Scam - This is the name of a scam on the Internet in which women are contacted by men and cheated out of their money.

The word “scam” means “to deceive” in German. Literally, this is about romance scams (English: Romance Scam): Facebook or Instagram profiles that pretend to be a young man, usually an American, who is in military service, has “stumbled upon” a profile and is interested in interested in the user's profile. However, after a short time the interest shifts more towards financial matters.

As the current episode of File Number XY shows, women can also turn the tables and expose the criminals.
ZDF reports that Erika Linde fell victim to a love scammer and is now warning others about these scammers.

She did a little research on the internet about the scam and came across the forum romancescambaiter.de , in which members post photos of the scammers they come across on the internet (although the images used are usually stolen, and the people themselves often have no information about the abuse knowledge).

The members of the forum take active action against romance scammers by keeping them busy for as long as possible and, ideally, even exposing them. But they also help victims of this scam and educate them about it.

The direct exposure is also part of the exciting part of the activity:
the women arrange a direct handover of money with the fraudsters and justify this to the criminals by saying that, for example, the bank transfer would not work. Since it always involves large sums of several thousand euros, the romance scammers often go into the handover.

And that's when the women's trap closes: Of course, the handover doesn't take place at home, but in public places... where there are enough police officers in plain clothes who can then immediately arrest the fraudster!

This is not without danger, as a woman reported to “ MoPo ”. She once persuaded one of the perpetrators to come from Paris to the summit of the Swiss mountain Piz Gloria.

“When he realized I had tricked him, he was so angry that he wrote to me saying he was going to kill me.”

ZDF gives the following advice to protect yourself from romance scams:

  • No pure internet love is real. In general, no one who you don't know personally talks about love or even marriage. Don't be blinded. Usually something is wrong.
  • Don't pay any money. No one who claims to love you would ask for money, no matter what plight they claim.
  • Don't blindly trust strangers. Don't let yourself be put under pressure, even by the worst stories.
  • Trust common sense. If the story of an online acquaintance seems strange to you, be suspicious. Confide in someone and talk about it.
  • To file charges. If you have already fallen into the trap, shame is not appropriate. Report this to your local police. This is the only way to investigate and save other women from the same fate.
