The screenshot of a school's school material once again causes irritation on Facebook: Did children have the sentence “... only your arrogance is German” in the materials?

This topic has been circulating again since November 11, 2019. Again, because this topic is already 3 years old. What exactly is this about? This is a picture on which you can see a typical task list that you would find in schools. On the left side there are lyrics, on the right side there are notes and the passage marked in red “only your arrogance is German”.

The image, in turn, is embedded in a chat history. This part of the chat history is distributed in the form of a screenshot and is intended to draw attention to the marked passage. The image itself is not new, but has been on social media since 2016. What is new, however, is just a text superimposed over the image in black letters. It reads: “Children’s song about German HASS! Statement: Hate yourself! Or anything that is German.”

We saw this screenshot (without the additional text) for the first time on March 9, 2016. At this time, we have already made a request to the school mentioned in it. In response to the request, we already received an answer on March 10, 2016 (see here ), which we are publishing again here:

Good day Mr. Sachs, thank you very much for your inquiry and our phone call yesterday.

I confirm to you that the lyrics “Folk Song” by the (Luckau) folk band “Shawue” will be used at the Rosa Luxemburg School in Luckau. The song is around 20 years old and has been used by the music teacher in class for around 10 years.

Music teachers have (largely) a free hand (pedagogical freedom) when it comes to selecting song lyrics for music lessons. They integrate song lyrics into lessons in a meaningful way. The framework curriculum for the subject of music stipulates that the standards for grade 6 are as follows: The students justify their opinions and evaluations of the music they hear and exchange their thoughts in tolerant manners.

The topic “Listening to, understanding and classifying music” describes:
– Musical and everyday references are identified and interpreted in connection with the respective cultural background.
– Music is heard and described as a social phenomenon in its function for different people and in its effect. You learn to deal with differences of opinion respectfully and constructively.

The undoubtedly provocative lyrics of the song “Folk Song” are suitable for these goals. What is crucial is pedagogical support, the transfer of knowledge and stylistic devices such as: B. Irony.

The text is intended to address the topic. In class, the basics are first taught, on the basis of which the students should form their own opinions. References are made to political education and LER [note: lifestyle, ethics, religion].

Art, poetry, theater and also music choose exemplary and symbolic excerpts to convey a message, even in exaggerated terms. This is also the subject of analyzing song lyrics in class.

Music lessons at the Luckau elementary school reflect current discussions in society. This may also include the question of whether Germany is characterized more by arrogance or, in these weeks and months, by its willingness to help and solidarity.

I clearly reject the allegations made in this context on so-called social media.

I hope that this information has helped you and I remain with kind regards

The lyrics of the song entitled “Folk Song” come from the group “Shawue”.

For school lessons, the song “Folk Song” was modified at one point and the line “your whore is from Thailand” was changed to “your radio from Thailand”.

“Shawue” already commented on Facebook in 2016.

There are now a lot of schools in Germany (not just in Brandenburg) that use our songs in their lessons. There are songs like: e.g. “She dances on her wheels”, “Then scream”, “Sarajevo” or the “Folk song”. The latter has now led to an outcry of indignation in Brandburg. And is dubbed “left-wing sedition”. The song, which is at least 20 years old and could therefore already be considered a German song, has now been discovered by people who have set up a page that stands for freedom of expression. The corresponding post reads:

>>> ... when only arrogance remains in Brandenburg school books from Germany <<<
But Brandenburg educators searched for a long time to find the anti-German text for primary schools.
Found by the band Shawue…

This saying alone is pretty stupid, but the reactions to it are shocking.
Before making such statements, these people should first think through the text.
