It is becoming increasingly difficult for people in Russia to obtain objective information about the Ukraine conflict. After Facebook and Instagram were recently blocked on the grounds that they were “extremist organizations” ( we reported ), the most-watched European news channel is now no longer available in Russia.
Euronews spreads false information
The Russian news agency Tass justified the blocking of the channel, whose programming reaches 440 million households in 160 countries and is also broadcast in Russian, with the spread of “false information” from Euronews about the war in Ukraine, which is only considered in Russia “Special operation” is called. Otherwise, those responsible for the station would face up to 15 years in prison under a new media law.
The broadcaster rejects the allegations
In a detailed statement, Euronews rejects the accusations and calls for compliance with Article 19 of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights on media freedom. The Russian people must be able to “express their opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through all media and regardless of borders.”
Euronews has been an important independent source of information for millions of Russians for over 20 years and reaches over 30 million TV households. The news channel is not only the most watched, but also the best-known and most trusted international news brand in Russia.
The broadcaster sees the “unacceptable censorship” as further proof that it has remained true to its own values in reporting on the Ukraine conflict; it will neither compromise nor apologize for its reporting.
It will continue to be broadcast in Russian
In the statement, the channel notes that it will continue to adhere to its mission of continuing to provide Russian citizens with independent, impartial and pluralistic information. The live TV broadcast of the Russian-language edition of Euronews will continue to be available on Euronews digital platforms.
In addition, the station's live stream can also be accessed via a VPN (virtual private network). Further distribution options are currently being examined and will be announced in due course.
