Russia's war against Ukraine is also a cyber war. The Neue Züricher Zeitung stated in an article on April 28, 2022 that Russia began preparing its invasion with cyberattacks a year ago. Since February 24th there have been hacker attacks on authorities and companies in Ukraine every day.

In return, a front of computer-savvy Internet users has formed to attack Russia's cyber infrastructure and protect that of Ukraine. The dangers of this theater of war cannot be estimated. standard.at points out that "in these spheres you often don't know who you are really dealing with - that is, whether there is someone with completely different interests behind an action or group."

Cyber attack app against Russia is Russian spy software

This is also the case with the supposed pro-Ukrainian app “Cyber Azov”. What was disguised as an app for cyber attacks against Russia has now been revealed as Russian spy software. Users assumed that the app came from the Ukrainian Azov regime.

However, according to security researchers at Google's Threat Analysis Group, the app was developed by the Turla hacking group, which is directly associated with the Russian secret service FSB.

Instead of the promised DoS attacks on selected Russian websites (which floods web servers with a high number of requests so that they collapse under the load), the app only makes contact briefly once. However, by installing the app, the FSB has data about the users.

The Cyber Azov app is said to have been exposed very quickly. According to the standard.at report, the associated website is still online and even the malware is still available for download.

Cyber Azov is said to be modeled after the Stop War app, which is actually used for DoS attacks against Russia.
